The Opportunity Shoppe is a pretty magical place where interesting items – from traditional thrift shop finds to home décor and furniture – are dusted off and given a new lease on life. However, as cool as that is, there is something even more magical that takes place behind the scenes of the Opportunity Shoppe – lives are transformed.
Your purchase is used by Senior Services of Snohomish County to help seniors and people with disabilities live with dignity and independence – something that can be very difficult.
Many older adults and people living with disabilities live in the shadows. With limited funds and no family or friends, they often don’t see much hope in their future. That was the story of Jodee who has been courageous enough to let us share her story:
In Jodee’s words -
“There is nothing simple about growing old or living with a life changing disability. I think too often that people who really need our help are invisible. They are often isolated, alone, fearful and in poor health. I know firsthand because their story is my story. Several years ago I was at the lowest point in my life. I lost my job, my income, my health, and I almost lost my home. I not only felt invisible – I was invisible. When you are this low it is almost impossible to reach out for help…
You can live without a lot of things but you can’t live without food, you can’t live without heat, and if you need to get to the doctor you can’t live without a ride. These are things that Senior Services made possible for me.”
From all of us at Senior Services, please enjoy your new found treasures from the Opportunity Shoppe and feel good knowing you are helping some of the most vulnerable people in our community live with dignity and independence. And from Jodee and the thousands of people we help each year, please accept our heartfelt thanks.
P.S. Just in case you are wondering – Jodee continues to live in our community. She has a happy life and she is a pretty cool lady.
